In the late 1880s, Marsalis - Armstrong dubbed Oak Cliff, "The Cambridge of The South," due to its luxurious homes and institutions. The area boasted high-end residences, including the famous Lake Cliff Hotel, and an amusement park, which attracted visitors from all over. Oak Cliff was developed with the vision of being an upscale and vibrant community but later was outpaced by other parts of Dallas. To this day, Oak Cliff remains a significant reminder of the city's diverse history and development, boasting one of Dallas' very own arts districts, Bishop Arts.
